The Department of Economics at Rovira i Virgili University was established in 2000 from the division of the initial Department of Business Management and Economics which had brought together, until that time, all the professors of the subjects of 'University Economics and Business.
Currently, the Department of Economics integrates the knowledge areas of Fundamentals of Economic Analysis, Applied Economics and History and Economic Institutions; about seventy teachers work within these profiles, sixty percent of whom are full-time teachers. Currently, the Department teaches in 9 degrees and 10 academic masters at Rovira i Virgili University.
The main objective of the Department of Economics is to offer society a high-level university education, based on the teaching and research quality of its teaching staff. This is why we have fostered a working environment that stimulates quality research, that especially attracts young professionals with great potential and that ensures the dissemination of knowledge towards society. The result of this philosophy is a staff that combines national and international origins and training, and that has contributed to a constant increase in scientific production, both in quantitative and qualitative terms.
On the other hand, the Department of Economics has a clear vocation of projection on its territorial environment, of which it has become a point of reference. This is corroborated by the importance of some of the knowledge transfer projects that the Department has led and/or collaborated on, particularly in strategic planning, territorial planning, mobility studies, economic and environmental impact analysis or analysis of public policies, among others.
Since its creation, the Department of Economics has been directed by professors Martí Oliva (2000-2006), Ferran Mañé (2006-2009), Bernd Theilen (2009-2017), Juan Antonio Duro (2017-2022) and the teacher Maria Llop Llop (since July 2022).
